Ballot Access Mississippi

Ballot Access Mississippi (BAM) is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization promoting the restoration of the ballot initiative in Mississippi. As enumerated in our state constitution, we believe the ballot initiative is a right reserved for the voters of Mississippi, and those voters deserve to have their voices heard. Our mission is to see that right returned to the voters through action by the state legislature. Our grassroots network includes local leaders and businesses from all across the state. The initiative process is important to voters, and our goal as an organization is to give those voters a voice in the conversations surrounding the restoration process.

Ballot Access Mississippi

The original ballot initiative and referendum process in Mississippi was established in 1992. Since that time, 76 Mississippi citizens or organizations have attempted to use this constitutionally guaranteed process to place an initiative on the ballot. 68 of these attempts have failed simply due to not surviving the rigorous nature of the process, and 5 of the attempts that survived were voted against. The only 3 initiatives that have survived the original process and been voted in by Mississippians are Voter ID, Eminent Domain, and Medical Marijuana.
